John White was born in Edinburgh but
raised in Melbourne, Australia to which his parents had emigrated in
1856. But he returned to Scotland in 1873 when he entered the Royal
Scottish Academy. Thereafter he seemed to move to the south of England
with addresses in London, Surrey and Devon. He exhibited widely at such
venues as the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Fine
Art Society, the Royal Society of British Artists and other venues. He
was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI) and
the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI).
His subjects are quite varied including
landscapes, marine, genre and portraits, both in oil and watercolour. An
example of his work is in the Exeter Museum. The particular watercolour
shown above is interesting because of the subtle use of tone to
primarily convey the scene, with very low intensity colours.
