Doug Lowe was born in Krugersdorp,
South Africa in a mining family. At an early age his father moved to a
large farming estate in Barberton, an idyllic landscape where Doug grew
up. The lush foliage and the intense colours of the tropical flora have
since influenced his painting.
Both
his father and mother painted although Doug was largely self taught, and
he initially tended towards abstract compositions. At the age of 21 he
emigrated to England and started to move towards figurative
representation. In London he drifted into and out of The Heatherley and
Hammersmith Art Schools, continuing to paint prolifically.
After a long break, he started painting
again and moved rapidly into representational painting, this time in
acrylics which was a medium which suited his temperament better than the
slow medium of oils.

By
this time he had moved to live in Manchester and eventually settled in the Marple area where he has lived since 1980. Since 2000 he has been able
to devote most of his time to painting. He joined the Vernon Mill
Artists Group in 2001 where he has a permanent studio. Also in 2001 he
founded the Mellor and Marple Art Society and was elected Chairman.

As you can see from the above examples,
he uses more than one style of painting, although he now generally uses
acrylic pigments. Other subjects he paints are still lifes, portraits
and figure studies.
