This
web site covers British art from the 1850s onwards. It is dedicated to
the enjoyment of traditional watercolours, oils and pastels from that period. The emphasis is on
the evocation of nature, either in landscapes, seascapes or still life.
Whether it is the simulation of the misty scenery of Devon by Frederick
J. Widgery (see right), the more modern coastal views of Jean
Canter (see below) or flower pictures (such as the example by Mary
Butler below), these paintings create a strong reaction in the viewer.
The site is primarily educational in
that it shows you typical pictures from some of the artists in this
period, with biographical notes. Go to
the Gallery tab for more background
information or to browse the pictures; go to the
Artists tab to see a
list of the artists covered. Some of the pictures are for sale - those
that are have an indicated price shown - those that do not are either
not for sale or have previously been sold. Go to the Legal tab for more
information on sales and general conditions of use of this site. If you
are interested in selling, or otherwise exhibiting, your own pictures on this web
site then please go to the Exhibiting page for more information.
The site provides high resolution
images and we recommend that you use a high speed or broadband internet
link, otherwise you may find it somewhat slow in parts. Click on any picture to see
a larger, higher resolution image.
The site is best viewed at a screen
resolution of 1024 x 768.
We welcome any queries on the pictures
or artists, additional information that we can add to the site, or
suggestions for improvements. Use the Contact tab to send us an email.
